I think our earliest home is where our primal attachments were formed, to family and neighborhood, friends, etc. We maintain a sense of this as “home” regardless of what life brings later, IMO.

A home could have been a very traumatic experience. The heart today is usually considered to be the seat of emotions mostly certainly including love but a love that rises beyond emotions. Today like the past 59 years I have shared my heart with my wife. Several times we have moved but wherever we set up there our hearts were. There are many types of love for family, friends, significant others, but the love I now share with my wife is the one we promised ourselves would last forever. For us love is where our hearts are.

Didn’t it come about much earlier when military men had to be of a certain rank to decide if shots were to be or not to be. Otherwise war would be complete chaos like they are today, a little jab there. Even today the police captain calls the shots, that is, whether or not shots will take place and whether they’ll be:fatal or not. Goes way back to the invention and deployment of the gun.

The key thing about this idiom, that is missing here, is that the hot potato is something that no one wants to deal with and it gets passed from person to person or organisation to organisation, or similar. This is why it is a *hot* potato, no one wants to hold it for long.

Well it’s pretty obvious. If you can form an alliance of any sort with you enemies however obnoxious they may be, do everything possible to keep it. The alternative is war. Take the example of Russia.
